they are gutting a body of water – the chase

Philadelphia shoegazers they are gutting a body of water share “the chase”, the opening track from their upcoming album “LOTTO” (October 17 on Julia’s War/Smoking Room/ATO Records). The band recently signed to ATO after building a cult following through extensive DIY touring.

“the chase” delivers charred, sweeping waves of distortion with a brief timeout that doesn’t reduce the tension. Douglas Dulgarian wrote the song during a challenging period, describing it as the mission statement for the record: “living in truth is a practice, and it’s never too late to get real again.”

The band challenged themselves to put guitar first on “LOTTO”, abandoning digital technology to embrace the live-band format fully. Dulgarian describes it as an attempt to “surface through the sea of false muck” in a world of increasing artifice. The album captures four human musicians in a room, complete with perceivable mistakes and natural ebb and flow.

They Are Gutting A Body Of Water built their reputation approaching shoegaze with an experimental edge. Their live shows incorporate EDM interludes drawing from 90s drum & bass and N64 soundtracks. They perform on the floor, purposely facing each other rather than the audience. Fans drive hours for shows and sneak photos of their pedal boards.
